Kai Shappley Graces the Scene!

“At nine years old, adorned in a new cherry-red cape, I embody Princess Little Red Riding Hood,” Kai Shappley expresses with a burst of youthful enthusiasm. “It’s inspired by ‘Land of Stories,’ a book where fairy tales are reimagined. In this version, Little Red Riding Hood is not just a character; she’s magical, stunning, and ultimately rises to be the queen of her people,” she explains, hinting at the deeper connection she feels with the book’s author, Chris Colfer, who also champions LGBTQ rights. In his narrative, Red leads a pivotal movement, The C.R.A.W.L. (Citizen Riots Against Wolf Liberty) Revolution. Kai, a transgender icon in her community, shines as a young, hopeful figure for the ACLU.

Having recently moved to Austin with her mother, Kimberly, Kai is navigating her new surroundings with clarity and confidence. “Though I was born in a body that didn’t match my identity, my heart and mind have always known I am a girl,” Kai shares about her experience explaining what being transgender means to others. Their move from Pearland was driven by the search for a more supportive environment and an LGBTQ-affirming school district that staunchly opposes harassment of any kind, including that based on gender identity. Previously, Kai’s challenges and her mother’s advocacy were captured in the Emmy-winning 18-minute documentary, “Trans in America: Texas Strong,” which portrays their struggle for Kai’s right to live free from discrimination.

Kai’s journey to embrace her true self began in an unlikely setting—a home rooted in evangelical Christian values. “When she was born, I was a fervent participant in the Baptist ministry and a staunch Republican Tea Partier,” recounts Kimberly, who initially punished Kai for her inclination towards dresses and dolls. Persistent even in the face of adversity, Kai would insist, “You know I’m a girl,” a statement she began making at just three years old. Kimberly recalls a poignant moment when, at four years old, Kai prayed alone, wishing not to live if she had to continue as a boy. This led Kimberly to finally allow Kai to embrace her identity openly from kindergarten, including legally changing her birth name and living freely as a girl.

Kai displays a remarkable sense of fearlessness and an innate ability to open hearts and minds. The documentary showcasing her story has amassed nearly 3.3 million views on YouTube, inspiring viewers worldwide, including a man from North Carolina who orchestrated a global show of support for Kai, sending her a “40-pound box of love” filled with letters from every continent. Kai’s public appearances, including on shows like “Today” and networks like HBO and Fox News, further amplify her message. During a visit to Washington, D.C., her spontaneous interaction with Texas Representative Pete Olson, who opposed the Equality Act, highlights her ability to connect unexpectedly and meaningfully, even with those on the far right.

This year began with AISD’s Pride week, where Kai, after a screening of “Trans in America,” took to the stage to express her gratitude towards the school’s principal for supporting the LGBTQ community, introducing herself with a playful twist: “My name is Kai Shappley, and my pronouns are her, she, like the candy bar!” Renowned for her undaunted spirit, Kai is a profound influence in activism, with an authenticity that resonates deeply with those she encounters. “Her sense of self is the foundation of her activism, something not commonly found,” observes Amy Bench, the film’s cinematographer.

Looking forward, Kai and Kimberly are set to feature in Daresha Kyi’s upcoming documentary “Mama Bears,” spotlighting conservative Christian mothers who embrace their LGBTQ children. Kai is also preparing for her role in a new Netflix series this summer. Recently, she and her mother were honored with the Glen Maxey Activism Award by Equality Texas, where Angela Hale, acting CEO, praised Kai’s courage and infectious energy: “Kai is a brave, fierce, and incredibly intelligent young girl with a vibrant personality. She humanizes the transgender child experience, helping us show that a transgender child is just a child, deserving of love and acceptance.”
